Phase I of the City Center Complex project began July 25, 2023, after the approval of the contract for the demolition of the Downtown Community Center (DCC) and the Planning and Public Works (PPW) building at the intersection of Main Street and Littler Avenue.
City Council approved $188,590 for the demolition and removal of materials from both buildings. It’s expected this phase of the project will take two months. Additionally, $6.8 million was approved for items that are typical components of construction: Insurance, Bonding, Personnel, Permits, Site Cleanup, and Safety. The nearly $7 million were projected costs and fall within the $44 million budget for the new City Hall, Municipal Court, and public parking garage.
To ensure the safety of both the public and project crews, a section of Littler Avenue is closed, and some parking areas and the Littler lawn park area will be closed to the public and used for project equipment and personnel staging.
Closures are anticipated to take 20 months while work on the project is completed. During these closures, please note the following changes for traffic and parking in the downtown area:
- Through traffic will not be allowed on Littler Avenue between First Street and Main Street.
- Main Street will remain open until the first of the year, and then be closed from the Littler and Main intersection west approximately half a block. That closure will open when public events make it necessary.
- Parking could be stressed during peak times throughout the downtown area. Several areas near the construction site will be closed, including the Littler Lawn parking areas, the east parking lot behind the PPW building, and the City-owned parking lot on the northwest corner of Littler and Main.
The City Center Complex will provide larger, more modern facilities for City departments, the Municipal Court, and public meeting spaces. When complete, the new City Hall – located on the site of the DCC – will be a 59,000-square-foot facility housing multiple City departments, an expanded City Council chamber, and more space for public meetings. The new Municipal Court will be larger, with more room to accommodate both staff and the public, and the parking garage will provide 216 free spaces, many of those covered, for both City personnel and public use.
The project is expected to be completed by March 2025.
